How to Get Back to Your Inner Authority
Let’s be real—most of us have spent a large chunk of our lives outsourcing our decisions to external forces. Parents, teachers, partners, astrology memes, that one friend who somehow has their life together (??), or just good old-fashioned panic-Googling at 2 AM.
But here’s the thing: your inner authority already knows the way. It’s been whispering to you (or, depending on your design, nudging, pulling, or downright screaming), but if you’ve been conditioned to ignore it, it might feel… elusive.
So, how do we clear the static, tune back in, and let our inner authority lead the way?
Our Lives Change When We Change How We Make Decisions.
Life is just a series of decisions, and we’ve been taught to make them based on logic, reason, external advice, and following the “right” path. We’re conditioned to trust plans, projections, and the status quo—even when they don’t align with our authentic needs and desires.
But here’s the problem: the mind holds our conditioning. It’s wired to repeat what’s familiar, to keep us safe by maintaining what it already knows. If we keep making decisions the way we always have, we keep creating the same patterns, the same struggles, and the same stuckness.
Inner Authority is different. It’s your built-in decision-making GPS, an intelligence that operates beyond conditioning, fear, or mental overanalysis. It’s the messenger of your heart—your body consciousness communicating your truth to you in real time.
How to Find Your Inner Authority:
Look at your Human Design chart. If you don’t have one yet, you can generate it online using your birth date, time, and place. (I use http://www.geneticmatrix.com)
Find which energy center is defined and labeled as your “Authority.” (Unless you are a Reflector, in which case your process is entirely unique!)
That’s your decision-making process—your clearest, most authentic way of knowing what’s right for you.
When you begin following your Authority, you start deconditioning. Your decisions shift from mind-led (often leading to frustration, resistance, or burnout) to body-led (which aligns you with ease, flow, and personal truth).
Sounds simple, right? Well…
Although the concept is incredibly simple, trusting and experimenting with your authority can be deeply uncomfortable. We are very attached to our ideas, beliefs, and plans. The mind craves certainty, control, and familiarity—it will fight back.
It will doubt, rationalize, and overcomplicate.
Your job? To listen anyway.
How to Reconnect With Your Inner Authority
Now, let’s talk about how to actually tune in to your specific Authority.
Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus) → Ride the wave.
Your clarity doesn’t come in the moment—it comes with time.
If you feel super excited or super low, you don’t have the answer yet.
Give yourself time before making decisions. Sleep on it. Let the emotion settle.
Practice: Instead of asking, "What do I want right now?" ask, "How does this feel over time?"
Sacral Authority (Gut Response) → Trust the “uh-huh” or “uh-uh.”
Your body knows immediately if something is right for you.
Light, expansive, energizing? YES.
Heavy, constricting, draining, meh vibes? NO.
Practice: Stop explaining why—your gut just knows.
Splenic Authority (Intuition, Instant Knowing) → The first whisper is the answer.
Your first instinct is always correct—it’s quiet, quick, and calm.
If you start doubting, you’re already in your head.
Practice: Act on your first instinct without second-guessing.
Self-Projected Authority (Gotta Talk It Out) → Speak your truth aloud.
You hear your own clarity when you talk things through (it’s almost like making ethereal feelings concrete through speech).
Your voice literally carries the answer, so listen to yourself.
Practice: Surround yourself with people who reflect, not direct. You may need people you trust to act like sounding boards, allowing you to verbalize your thoughts and feelings without adding their advice or input.
Ego Authority (Heart-Led Decisions) → Follow your desires.
What do you WANT? What does your heart pull you towards? What do you have the will power for?
If you’re forcing or acting from ego, it’s a no.
Practice: Make decisions based on personal will and desire, not external pressure.
Mental Authority (Soundboarding, Environmental) → Find the right space & people.
You don’t make decisions alone—you need trusted environments and reflections.
Notice how places and people make you feel before deciding.
Practice: Speak your thoughts in different places and see what resonates. Similar to self-projected authority, you may also need trusted sounding boards to speak aloud to.
Lunar Authority (Reflector Magic) → Give it a full moon cycle.
You need 28 days to feel into big decisions.
Your clarity comes from observing different angles, moods, and perspectives.
Practice: Slow down. Don’t let anyone rush you.
Clearing the Static: Conditioning Blocks That Muffle Your Inner Authority
Now that you know how your inner authority speaks, let’s talk about what’s drowning it out:
People-pleasing. If you’re making choices to make others comfortable, you’re not following your authority.
Fear of uncertainty or of being wrong. Alignment doesn’t always feel easy or comfortable—stepping into something new can bring up fear and discomfort. But fear of the unknown doesn’t mean something is wrong; it often means you’re growing. If a decision feels right at a deeper level, even if it stretches you, trust it. Sometimes, we have to walk through fear to be initiated into the life we’re meant for.
Needing external validation. If you keep asking others for answers, pause and ask yourself: "Do I actually already know?"
Pushing for instant clarity. Some authorities (especially emotional) need time. Rushing leads to messy decisions. If you’re not getting a clear answer, it might mean no, but it could also mean you don’t have all the information yet. Instead of forcing a decision, pause and let things unfold naturally—clarity will come when the timing is right.
Daily Practice to Strengthen Your Inner Authority
Want to sharpen your connection? Try this every day:
Pause before making decisions. Check in with your body before defaulting to logic.
Notice the signals. Is your gut pulling you forward? Does something feel energizing or depleting? Is your spleen whispering? Is your emotional wave activated?
Experiment with small choices. Start with low-stakes decisions (food, plans, daily tasks) to build confidence.
Journal your hits. Track the times you listened and how things unfolded. Proof builds trust.
The More You Trust It, The Clearer It Gets
The fastest way to get back to your authority? Act on it.
Even if it doesn’t make sense.
Even if people don’t understand.
Even if your mind wants more logic.
Your mind will resist less when it has proof. The more you witness the shifts that come from following your inner knowing, the easier it becomes to trust.
It takes courage to listen to yourself—to honour your truth even when it challenges expectations. Sometimes, your authority will ask you to dismantle parts of your life that no longer align, to let go of what’s familiar in order to step into something more authentic.
Be patient with yourself as you practice. Go slow. Let the emotions surface as they need to. And most of all, trust—your body will never lead you astray.
